From front-line health workers and emergency services through to security personnel, aviation, transport and all the shift workers in between, there exists a shared experience: we’re in the trenches together.

A veteran 24/7 shift worker with almost four decades working in Law Enforcement myself, I have a frank understanding of how shift work manifests itself in plummeting workplace morale, low productivity and increases in unplanned leave.

But when we are taught no different, shift work smothers any chance of balance, harmony, productivity and maintaining a passion for your work. Through A Healthy Shift I have coached shift workers worldwide and changed their personal and professional lives with evidence-based and holistic health solutions. And now, through keynote speaking opportunities and seminars, I have magnified these results throughout Australia, offering an unwavering commitment to helping shift workers thrive and not just survive.

I am a veteran shift worker and certified nutritionist who has developed a framework for delivering workshops that are relatable, practical and results-focused. My extensive shift work experience, combined with evidence-based health solutions, allows me to connect with fellow shift workers and deliver pragmatic shift work solutions. 

I’ve taken it upon myself to stay abreast of the ever-emerging research that informs best working practices for shift work, alleviating the mental toll managers experience. My seminars equip your workplace with practical strategies, without having to do any legwork yourself. Shift workers see improvements immediately, and the results speak for themselves: a united and healthy workforce who can once again find passion in their work, reductions in unplanned leave, tools and strategies that prevent burnout and employees who have a sense of control over their health and wellbeing.

About Roger Sutherland

I am a veteran shift worker who has worn many hats over the last four decades working in Law Enforcement. I am a father of two shift working adult children, a partner to a former shiftworker and a father-in-law to a shift working son. I have been a confidant to fellow employees suffering from the rigours of shiftwork. And for many years, I was also a victim to the detrimental and debilitating effects of shift work due to lack of education. 

Until I returned to study Nutrition at the age of 55. I had an inkling that there was more we could be doing to preserve and promote our own health as shift workers, partners, parents, friends and co-workers. I was accepted into the world renowned school of nutrition, Mac-Nutrition Uni, the gold standard for evidence-based nutrition practitioners. I absorbed every module, learning and applying this newfound nutrition and wellness information to the nuances of shift work. 

In 2019, I embarked on A Healthy Shift, now a certified evidence-based nutritionist ready to shift perspectives and change lives. My seminars and keynote engagements delve into the importance of nutrient timing (also known as chrononutrition), sleep, optimising your body for night shift, movement, stress and mental health, why women are more affected by shift work and how illness manifests more commonly in shift workers. 

The preface of my work remains simple: to help shift workers to thrive, not just survive. And I look forward to creating this change in your workplace.
